Jessica Rules the Dark Side Beth Fantaskey Books

I remember loving book 1 in this series, and I don't know if it was because I was younger when I read it, or if it was really that much better. I had trouble even finishing this book because it was so predictable. I knew who the killer was pretty much from the second the murder happened, and it took everyone else such a long time to pick up on it. I also thought the whole plot line with Ronnie was super predictable. So basically I was frustrated by how dumb the main characters were the whole time I was reading. I also felt like the book kind of sent the message that being in a relationship is the only thing that matters, and I didn't like how Jess and Mindy had to compromise on things, but the guys got to do pretty much whatever they wanted.

I was elated to see that Beth Fantaskey stuck with the simple but elegant cover that reflects on the first installment Jessica titled Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side. And the quote on the cover of this installment in the Jessica series made all the more alluring... "It's one thing to find out you're a vampire princess. It's a whole other thing to actually rule." I dove right into the continuing sage of Jessica (born Anastasia) and Lucius having been given a glimpse of Jessica's human world merging with her destined world in book one I was excited to visit Jessica and Lucius and see how the two would fit together in the vampire world.

Beth Fantaskey gives the reader a treat interlocking the story with multiple POV's with mystery. It keeps on edge and can be a bit confusing as you are trying to figure out the questions... Who is the killer? Can Jessica handle reigns without Lucius by her side? What's up with hovering cousin and Uncle? Better yet... What about Ronnie and Mindy? If you are an emotional involved reader like me you will find yourself rushing through to find clues what happens next.

The storyline is exceptionally written; Fantaskey continues Jessica and Lucius's love story full circle and adds new characters while weaving a thrilling plot. Although Lucius trusts Jessica's ability to set him free she doesn't. I was floored that Jessica spends more than half the book feeling sorry for herself. That is until Ronnie gives her the push she needs to make a stand and grow into her destined role.

One of my favorite parts was the email exchanges between Lucius and, his cousin Ronnie he calls brother. They are witty and show the uproarious side of the rebellious Lucius that we would never see from "Prince Lucius" otherwise.

Although I was elated to dive deeper into the lives Jessica and Lucius I found myself more engrossed with the Ronnie and Mindy storyline and await for their story to continue in future sequels. It was a joy glimpsing the story through Mindy eye as well and the struggles she faced in Jessica's world loving a vampire.

My final thoughts... Jessica has come a long way from being a human county gal who has to muck stalls to a ruling vampire, blood drinking princess. The book itself is complete the story itself is not. I anticipate Jessica and Lucius story to continue as they appeal to the elders for votes to be up lifted to heir destined position as King and Queen.

I received this as a bonus read to my purchase to Jessica's Rules the Dark Side.

I was a bit critical with my review to Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side considering that I did enjoy the story. However, the wedding of Jessica and Lucius was very fairy tale like... and was just what I had expected. I gushed with enjoyment as their promise was fulfilled.

The reader is also a treated to a small comical glimpse into how Raniero is first ushered back into Lucius and now Jessica's life. It has the feel that we are left with no cliff hangers... and we are not... However, there are subtle whispers weaved into the story line that are brought to like in the continuing sage Jessica Rules the Dark side.

My last thoughts... If you enjoyed Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side and are planning to read Jessica Rules the Dark side, it is my suggestion to purchase the kindle bonus with the wedding included and read the wedding before diving into Jessica Rules the Dark side. It will bring clarity to the... "Hump" moments.
The first book in Fantaskey's series had a ridiculous title and an awful cover. So why did I read it? Not quite sure, but I am glad I did. It was hilarious. It was a serious story peppered with the rantings of a persnickety vampire prince who just wanted his betrothed to come back to Romania with him and rule. What he didn't expect before he came for her was a vegan who worked on her family's small town farm and only dreamed of going to college- not becoming a vampire princess and settling a centuries old feud. After absolutely adoring Lucius' hilarious ramblings about lentils in the first book, I was looking for more of the same from Jessica Rules the Dark Side.

Jessica, who is known as Anastasia now that she is a vampire princess, loves Lucius, but hates Romania. The other vampires think she is weak, she only has one friend, and she can't even order food from the kitchen because she can't speak Romanian. To top off the horrible experience, she knows her inability to be the ruthless princess makes her husband vulnerable with the rest of the vampires he is trying to rule. When one of the vampire elders is murdered, Anastasia takes the advice of her friend and suggests all the vampires produce their stakes to catch the murderer. What she doesn't expect is that Lucius' stake is covered in the murdered vampires blood, but he swears he did not kill the man. Anastasia believes him, but the Elders insist he is locked in the dungeon until he can go to trial... without the blood he needs to survive. Now Anastasia must solve the murder to exonerate her husband, but with the return of old friends and the revelations of many secrets, she isn't sure she can be the princess (soon to be queen) Lucius wants her to be. If she can't, her husband's life ill be over.

I was a little surprised when I first read this book and saw just how dark it was. Don't get me wrong, it was a really good story, but compared to the light-hearted wit from Lucius in the first book, this one was much more serious. There were occasional moments of levity, but I definitely missed the Lucius you fell in love with in the first book. This story dealt much more with Jessica/Anastasia and her crippling fear of being the princess she needed to be. In fact, I was a little annoyed with her at times. At one point, her husband is locked, starving, down in the dungeon and she is lying in her bed feeling sorry for herself. I wanted to scream "Get out of bed you twit! Take care of business!" Eventually she did rise to the occasion and take charge, but it was frustrating to watch her flounder so much.

While the main characters were the focus in the first book, they faded into the background with this one. The supporting characters, like Lucius' childhood friend and Anastasia's friend Mindy from home, made up a lot of the meat of the story. Luckily, it was an interesting part of the story, and Mindy's fun take on the situation was a welcomed touch. This story is appropriate for a wide range of ages and will still hold the attention of anyone who liked the first story (as long as they could ignore the silly title). It is a good, easy read for any struggling reader to be successful with.
