A very honest portrayal of the long-term effects of childhood trauma. The author shares her struggles, which are both personal and shared by others who have been there. I read it and recommended it to another friend who has struggled her whole life with the same sorts of issues. This book may be triggering for some, but it also brings release from bondage to the need to be super-anything and the fears and weights that brings on a person. I also recommend this book to those who remember no abuse but felt abandoned due to adoption, foster care, or other kinds of alienation and lack of nurture while growing up. It is the kind of memoir that should be read by pastors, social workers, child care workers and others who care about young children and the hidden pain they so often suffer in our society, or the adults they reach who still hold such painful memories.

We live in a world of masks, Mary DeMuth's Thin Places makes it safe to take yours off. I first was introduced to Mary DeMuth through my presence at the first Christian Book Expo in Dallas. As I sought out to those who were encouraging other writers, leading, teaching...Mary's name continued to ring out as one who not only walked the life of a writer, but lead others in their walks to publish. Thin Places is another example of how Mary uses her own experiences to teach, to share, to unmask the deceptive lies that Satan spreads that somehow someone else' world was perfect growing up. Mary faced so many difficult situations but what makes this story so poignant is her honesty, her openness as she shares....She shares her questions, her experiences, her faults, her growth, and her celebrations. Her message is one of a journey, one that never ends as we find the Thin Places-the places we see God plainly- in the circumstances, whisperings, and dreams he gives us. Mary's story reaffirms to me all that I learned of her a year ago....she is intelligent, thoughtful, intentional, and most of all a teacher, who shares God's lessons as she learns them.
I found this to be an excellent read and for anyone that dealt with early sexual abuse, what a gift to discover a friend in Mary as she speaks from the deepest places in her heart and her need for Jesus. So many places, so many times, I wanted to say "Me, too!" I'm so thankful to have found Mary and to have discovered her books. This one in particular, though a tough read in many places, is an important book for someone that wants healing from the past and to see where Jesus is throughout. Thank you, Mary! God bless!
Thin places Is a raw truth told by Mary so that women and girls can live in full healing of the truth that happened to them. Well written, easy but painful story to follow. Gods grace is all over this story for women. Thin places Made me reflect on the thin places of my life where I could cling to the God who sees.
I’ve read a couple of Mary’s books (Not Marked) and I love her courageous authenticity to tell her story. Her story connects with mine and her perspectives shared here resonates with me deeply. Several times I am brought to tears because so. I know that may not be the case for all but she tells her truth wrapped in Gods truth in a way that can bring something to the table for everyone. It matters whether or not your looking for the whisper...
Thin Places by Mary DeMuth is a journey through her pain and suffering into the renewed life of healing through Jesus Christ. She doesn't justify her past abuse nor her own sinful choices. She encircles it all the hands of a merciful God who loves us unconditionally. She continues to ask the hard questions, but she also rests in God's love for her.

If you have dark places in your life that continue to ooze, refusing to come to a complete healing, Thin Places just might help you to begin to acknowledge the evil that still grips you. As Mary shows from her life, reopening those wounds isn't easy, but it is often necessary to allow the fresh air of God's power to begin to cleanse and purify. And as Mary so ably shows us, healing is a process that God orchestrates in our lives when we are emotionally ready to move on. The process itself may take years or even a lifetime. The key is to begin.

If you lived a charmed childhood, you might not be able to relate to Thin Places. But reading it may give you more of an insight and a ministry to those who do carry burdens from their past.

Mary's memoir is more topical than chronological, but it isn't difficult to follow. I started reading it last night and finished it early this morning after a good nights rest.
"Life is messy." My pastor says that often. Most people nod their heads in agreement and then live out their lives, as Thoreau wrote, in "quiet desperation." Few are willing to let others step into their messiness. Mary DeMuth's memoir, "Thin Places," not only allows us in, but draws us into the places where God embraced her raggedy, disheveled, and chronically needy, blessed soul.

The book was unputdownable--from the introduction (which, by the way, was my favorite part!) to the last word. Mary's writing craft is impeccable. Seamless...flowing and clear. An editor's dream. So flawless I could take off my editor hat and be simply an eager reader.

The biggest surprise came when I found myself in the pages of someone else's life. I could relate to so many of the thin places where God met Mary and brought her along and through and over the hurdles and sufferings of her childhood and youth. Those slobbery kisses from over-eager boys. That yearning for a date...for a boyfriend...for fatherly affection. Keeping secrets. Compromising to fit in. Ugh! Those stuffed-down memories that remind us of our insecurities and less-than-stellar decisions. Why go there?

She tells us why To unmask our humanity--our frailty--and thereby removing the power our messiness tries to hold over us. To reveal the God who sees, who cares, who redeems even the worst of sins and sinners. She exposes her pain--not to gain our sympathy, but to extend her hand as a fellow sufferer who wants our journeys to become stronger for knowing hers.

She succeeds.
